Grew up in Ireland
I lived The Divide
Catholic, Protestant
in constant collide
Moved to the US
I saw The Divide
white skin and black skin
a disdain of hide
Drove up to Canada
and felt The Divide
English and French
not on the same side
I wasn’t feeling great
It all seemed corrupt
but then:
. . . some unsung heroes rode up
. . . some unheard voices showed up
. . . some unknown saviours stood up
singing:
“your bones are my bones
you’ve the same teeth as me
we're living here together
the unselfish are free”
Went to the West Bank
could feel The Divide
the Muslim and Jew
in conflict ringside
Next landed in Spain
witnessed Divide
Spaniard and Basque
just could not abide
So flew to Brazil
and noticed Divide
the wealthy and poor
a human landslide
I wasn’t feeling great
It all seemed corrupt
but then:
. . . some unsung heroes rode up
. . . some unheard voices showed up
. . . some unknown saviours stood up
singing:
“your bones are my bones
you’ve the same teeth as me
we're living here together
the unselfish are free”
I’ll give it to you straight
with no mumbo-jumbo
It’s not baggage, it’s freight
and that’s why I grumble
But I did also detect
in each of the places
much reason, respect
and acts of good graces
So don’t give up fairness
Don’t give up your soul
Don’t give up on reason
Hope lives in a goal
Travelled to Korea
witnessed Divide
politics and power
a Jekyll and Hyde
Took off for India
and there was Divide
Brahman, untouchables
up high and curbside
Arrived in Afghanistan
and breathed The Divide
the men and the women
unequal through pride
I wasn’t feeling great
It all seemed corrupt
but then:
. . . some unsung heroes rode up
. . . some unheard voices showed up
. . . some unknown saviours stood up
singing:
“your bones are my bones
you’ve the same teeth as me
we're living here together
the unselfish are free”
I’ll give it to you straight
with no mumbo-jumbo
It’s not baggage, it’s freight
and that’s why I grumble
But I did also detect
in each of the places
much reason, respect
and acts of good graces
So don’t give up fairness
Don’t give up your soul
Don’t give up on reason
Hope lives in a goal
I wasn’t feeling great
It all seemed corrupt
but then:
. . . some unsung heroes rode up
. . . some unheard voices showed up
. . . some unknown saviours stood up
singing:
“your bones are my bones
you’ve the same teeth as me
we're living here together
the unselfish are free”
