Stirling 1972

I’m heading back to Stirling

Back to Stirling U.

Back to MacRobert Centre

to the protest of seventy-two

I still remember the sky

The sky was clear, pale blue

And I’d sooner run over me

than I’d ever walk over You

Yeh, I’m going back to Stirling

to recall what did ensue

Vice-Chancellor Tom Cottrell

overlooked extremist view

When the visit of Queen E.

led the Trotskyites to boo

It left all the student actors

not knowing what to do

When booze from Bridge of Allen

arrived out of the blue

With the afternoon bar open

Jackie Mackie drank a few

Beneath the shadow of Wallace

the haters came for You

It takes a village to build a town

to destroy it, one or two

The result, a heart attack

and Cottrell’s life was through

But where is Jackie Mackie

and that whisky bottle too?

Did he regret the moment

fate cruelly gave its due

Under the Wallace monument

front-stage in public view

Now, I don’t worship thrones

It’s not a thing I do

But there’s no room for insult

in loyalty’s strange brew

All our roles are personal

Queen E. she has hers too

Seems we play our part

and hope to play it true

So I’m heading back to Stirling

Back to Stirling U.

Back to MacRobert Centre

to the protest of seventy-two

And I still remember the sky

The sky was clear, pale blue

But I’d sooner run over me

than I’d ever walk over You

Yeh I’d sooner run over me

than I’d ever walk over You

Yeh ... sooner run over me

than ever walk over You

Yes, I’d sooner run all over me

than I'd ever walk all over You!

It's not the thing I'd do

and I know You wouldn't too!
