Skara Brae

Did the sun disappear
just as a ship’s mast appeared
through the fog and gentle morning rain?
Could a ship that spears the sky
and barely heaves a sigh
bring you anything other than pain?

As more vessels followed
were they soullessly hollow
when they anchored along Skara Brae?
Did silence harbour evil
in hearts raised primeval
on that bleak Orkney morning in May?

Cold was the day in small Skara Brae
when laughter was turned into silence
And sad was the way in small Skara Brae
when life’s peace was slaughtered by violence

Did demons climb the shore
offspring of Hate’s whore
wielding swords of hard-hearted steel?
Did they slice old and young
maybe a hero unsung
or a newborn asleep in a creel?
Cold was the day in small Skara Brae
when laughter was turned into silence
And sad was the way in small Skara Brae
when life’s peace was slaughtered by violence

Every tear in the sky
since the day they all died
washed the blood from small Skara Brae
Every wind that has cried
over bodies worn dry
has swept sad souls into the bay

So far away is small Skara Brae
more slaughter has happened since then
Somewhere each day there’s a new Skara Brae
where it happens all over again
Did the sun disappear
just as a ship’s mast appeared
through the fog and gentle morning rain?
Could a ship that spears the sky
and barely heaves a sigh
bring you anything other than pain?

Cold was the day in small Skara Brae
when laughter was turned into silence
And sad was the way in small Skara Brae
when life’s peace was slaughtered by violence

So far away is small Skara Brae
more slaughter has happened since then
Somewhere each day there’s a new Skara Brae
where it happens all over again
