Six Ways From Sunday

It was five before midnight

when she stepped off the bus

She pulled back her hair

and shouldered her purse

The welcoming committee

a thousand cicadas

On a southern humid night

in County Los Vardos

She stayed at a Red Roof

across from the bus stop

Breakfast was pancakes

over at IHOP

She rented a Buick

later that morn

Grace was headed for Wyatt

where she believed she was born

What do you do

when every clue

leads you further astray

puts obstacles right in the way

Officially that’s when we say

you’re six ways from Sunday:

One goes the wrong way

Two makes no sense to stay

Three’s a kinda grey day

Four you’re not OK

Five feels like come what may

Six says try a new play

Adopted at birth

she was seeking her mother

Research also hinted

there might be a brother

Pressing the doorbell

offered silent response

When she checked around back

she knew all at once

‘Cause there on a chair

slept her giver of breath

When the woman awoke

Grace saw she was deaf

Paper and pen were then

tearfully produced

A mother and daughter

at last introduced

What do you do

when every clue

leads you further astray

puts obstacles right in the way

Officially that’s when we say

you’re six ways from Sunday:

One goes the wrong way

Two makes no sense to stay

Three’s a kinda grey day

Four you’re not OK

Five feels like come what may

Six says try a new play

Rape of a teenager

was the start of the crime

A young foster family

was waiting in line

There was a half brother

turns out lived close by

When Grace met his children

their hugs made her cry

So Grace found her family

though the journey was long

She wouldn’t change a thing

now feels she belongs

Vacations down in Wyatt

gets treated real fine

After taking night classes

she has learned how to sign

What do you do

when every clue

leads you further astray

puts obstacles right in the way

Officially that’s when we say

you’re six ways from Sunday:

One goes the wrong way

Two makes no sense to stay

Three’s a kinda grey day

Four you’re not OK

Five feels like come what may

Six says try a new play
