Martha's Two Conditions

I first laid eyes on Martha
at a village meet and greet,
I booked a second date
and she chose where to eat
A few months after that
at my cottage homestead,
She fell into my arms
on my hideaway bed
My hideaway bed
is hidden no more
As Martha and me
dance the kitchen floor
I asked for Martha’s hand
way back that September,
She returned me a look
I will always remember
She said, “John Donald John
on two conditions only,
That you not go before me
and you don’t leave me lonely”
“Martha, dear Martha
I’ll not leave you alone,
But as far as my going
that’s a total unknown”
She said, “John Donald John
I’ll take one out of two,
But you must pledge loyalty
before I’ll marry you”
“Martha, dear Martha
you’re my love ’til I die,
And I’ll swear on the Bible
without a word of a lie”
My hideaway bed
is hidden no more
As Martha and me
dance the kitchen floor
As months and years went by
four little ones arrived,
Walks beneath the moonlight
made Martha feel alive
But on the greyest Fall day
a knock came to our door,
I heard the word “crash”
and I dropped to the floor
We rushed to the hospital
to be by her side,
When the children first saw her
they broke down and cried
My hideaway bed
is hidden no more
As Martha and me
dance the kitchen floor
For two nights and two days
I held her hand in mine,
Then she leaned close to me
to give a gentle sign
“Dear John Donald John”
she whispered but faintly,
“I’m going soon before you
so I’ll speak my mind plainly”
“You’ve kept the two conditions
and I love you more than then,
Now find another mother
for our darling children”
“Martha, dear Martha
there’s no other than yourself,
I will bring up our children
on my own by myself”
My hideaway bed
is hidden no more
As Martha and me
dance the kitchen floor
Martha passed that very day
and I held our children tight,
She might be gone from us
but she’s near at moonlight
My hideaway bed
is hidden no more
As Martha and me
dance the kitchen floor
Our family is larger now
grandkids have even grown,
I try to tell them often
of the nan they’ve never known
I never wed another
though there were a few petitions,
So I finally can say
I met Martha’s two conditions
My hideaway bed
is hidden no more
As Martha and me
dance the kitchen floor
As Martha and me
dance the kitchen floor
As Martha and me
dance forever more
As Martha and me
dance just like before
As Martha and me
dance right out the door
