Driving to Gainesville

Sue and me
were half asleep
but determined to keep
pushing the pedal to Gainesville
The kids were in back
counting sheep in the sack
when suddenly a bang on the grille
I got to straighten the truck
less with skill, more with luck
then settled fears all around
Jay’s neck and knee throbbed
sister Joan softly sobbed
as I turned and slid to the ground
There was blood everywhere
and returning my stare
was a big deer, broken and still
yet we were alive
and the truck had survived
an unlucky old buck was the kill
We got him hoisted in back
admired the twelve-point rack
then limped on the rest of our way
We remained wide awake
recalled the what-ifs at stake
dropped drapes on a memorable day
Sometimes life hits you right where it aches
And without any warning it raises the stakes
We all want to keep our families alive
And we sure want to see the future thrive
But maybe another hand predicts who survives
I can’t tell you the times
I’ve walked that fine line
between not stopping to pray
and making it through another day
Yes, I survived a tour
and no, never ever felt poor
Didn’t feel I deserved more than any other
yet I’m still here having lost many a brother
All I can be is thankful for how it’s gone
and hope you too have the good fortune to journey on
Sometimes life hits you right where it aches
And without any warning it raises the stakes
We all want to keep our families alive
And we sure want to see the future thrive
But maybe another hand predicts who survives
I took a lot of risks
an obit full of asterisks
and yet I’ve enjoyed a blessed life
kids, their kids and a wonderful wife
So what determines who’ll live and who will die
which families celebrate and which will cry
If I really knew
I’d tell the rest of you
All I can be is thankful for how it’s gone
and hope you too have the good fortune to journey on
Sometimes life hits you right where it aches
And without any warning it raises the stakes
We all want to keep our families alive
And we sure want to see the future thrive
But maybe another hand predicts who survives
